What is a Domain Name?
Put simply a domain name is the address that people use to find you or your company on-line; it's what you type in the browser's address bar to go to a specific website.
For example, Microsoft's domain name is: microsoft.com
A domain name is unique, hence it can only be assigned once and you can think of it like a phone number. Once it has been registered, no one else can use it providing that you keep up with the registration fees.
Typically a domain name should be tied to a Businesses identity as it will be used by customers and business associates to communicate via e-mail and/or access the website.
Many companies are registering and holding domains as well, in order to hold them for future development. In six months when a company is ready to "go on the Internet" whether with just e-mail or a full blown website, the domain name of their choice may have already been taken. So registering your domain choice and "parking" it until you need it is a solid Internet strategy.
